Sylvie Douche - MAURICE EMMANUEL. Compositeur francais

conference proceedings - Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), March 2004

Sylvie Douche (ed.)

MAURICE EMMANUEL. Compositeur francais

This book dedicated to French composer Maurice Emmanuel (1862-1938) was published in order to help readers re-discover his compositions and to provide at least some basic information about this Renaissance figure in all his cultural diversity. Emmanuel's compositional legacy, considered important today in the context of musical development in France during the first few decades of the 20th century, has always stood outside mainstream interest, since he was also an educated Hellenist, Latinist, musical theoretician and proficient music columnist.
The studies printed in this book were taken from a conference (the first to be dedicated entirely to Maurice Emmanuel) held at the Sorbonne in Paris in March 2004. They are divided into three main parts, of which the first places the composer within the context of his contemporaries (Claude Debussy, Maurice Denis), the next focuses on his operatic works (interesting in connection with references to ancient Greece) and the final part maps out his chamber and symphonic works.
The book also contains practical information, such as a list of works and musicological writings by Maurice Emmanuel, a bibliography and abstracts of individual papers. Editio Bärenreiter Praha is publishing this book in association with Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV).
